Norman Jones served in the Royal Engineers from 1958 until 1960. As a trained surveyor, he was employed on post war tunnelling, including the construction of the Keightley Way. In his account, Jones provides a detailed account of the network on tunnels within the Rock, the discovery of the lower St Michael Cave chambers, and contingency planning for the water purification plant. He also describes the reduction of the military presence in Gibraltar, relations with the local population and the general appearance and condition of the town.
